Inflammation is a serious issue in aging, fragility, and many diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis arthritis, etc. Interestingly the main aspect of severe covid-19 disease also includes hyper-induction of pro-inflammatory cytokines, also know as ‘cytokine storm’ that leads to acute respiratory distress in covid patients.
Out of all cytokines, two of them (TNF-alpha an IL-6) play the most crucial role and are responsible for the escalation in disease severity.
Therefore, if a cannabis strain can ‘down-regulate’ or ‘downgrade’ these cytokines, then the ‘cytokine storm’ may be avoided and disease severity may be reduced.
This study tested over 200 different cultivars to determine if any of them will achieve this goal. Tests were done on a well-established EpiDermFTTM tissue model.
It found that 6-8 cultivars had the most significant effect on downregulating TNF-alpha and IL-6 cytokines.
Detailed analysis showed that the terpene profile was quite unique in cultivars that were effective in downregulating cytokines. For example, these cultivars included beta-caryophyllene, alpha-bisabolol, guaiol, etc.
It clearly suggests that specific cultivars with specific terpene profiles will downregulate TNF-alpha and IL-6 cytokines and thus reduce inflammation pathways, thus reducing the severity of covid disease, rheumatoid arthritis (RA), psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis, osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia, and others. Indeed, cultivars targeting TNFα, IL-6, IL-1β and causing concerted and significant downregulation of the rheumatoid arthritis pathway, pending thorough verification and clinical validation, may present a novel and promising natural resource for RA treatments and management of other TNFα, IL-6, IL-1β-mediated diseases. Furthermore, a recent report shows that CBD and the combination of major terpenes were far superior to dexamethasone in treating COVID-19 [55], albeit a full and final report of this study is still pending.
Emprise Canada has prepared Softgel products that synthesize the cultivars and terpenes in exactly the same proportion as the original cultivars which were effective in downregulating. These were also tested in the lab and found to be equally effective.
